American Craving of the Week: Cheez-Its

I don’t know why, but I could NOT satisfy my appetite for Cheez-Its  this past Summer while we were in the US on furlough.  I didn’t even eat them all that often growing up, but I think they just tasted so familiar and 100% American that I could hardly stop eating them.

This week I have had the biggest Cheez-Its craving ever… totally insatiable.  So, I decided that I must make Cheez-Its. And I did. And they are amazing (and easy!). You should try it if you find yourself in need of a little taste of home!

I followed this recipe from at, although I used a white cheese that wasn’t low-fat instead of the recommended low-fat cheddar since we don’t have that here. They turned out great.

What is the most American craving that you’ve had recently? Have you stumbled upon any great and truly American recipes lately? Feel free to share a link or two!

Peanut butter is hard to find in Russia. Only one store in our city sells it, and we have to drive about an hour to get there! Since the kids LOVE peanut butter (and I do too!) I finally decided to make it myself. Just toss salted peanuts in a food processor with a few tablespoons olive or veg oil, and voila! Delicious, organic peanut butter!

Ha ha, that’s SUPER FUN! Love it!
I always think it’s so funny the things I buy in the import section because when we are in the US, I hardly even eat them. 🙂
If you’re craving a good yeast donut, this recipe is awesome!

I’m not a coffee creamer gal, but I know lots of my fellow missionary mamas are — just found this link this week. Haven’t tried any, but they look worth a shot!

yummy! Living in the US, we have Cheez-its available, but I will certainly try this frugal recipe instead of dropping $4 on a box that will be gone in 2 minutes between the kids and me.

I’m going to try the cheez-its recipe today. I’ve heard the Wheat Thins one is good, too. And I have a friend who can buy whole wheat flour near her home. Someday…

I also started making pb in a food processor, and love it. I love that my kids get sugar-free trans-fat-free peanut butter. (I don’t add oil, just let the processor run up to 20 minutes until it’s very smooth.)
