A Little-known Remedy

olive oil

I’m about to let you in on a little secret.  It’s the world’s best remedy for bumps and bruises, and it’s probably already sitting in your kitchen cupboard, just waiting for so noble of a use.  Has your toddler ever smacked into the coffee table and come out with an egg on her forehead?  Or are your kids accident-prone and always getting bruises?  Okay, here’s the secret: rub olive oil on the owie!  That’s it.  It sounds crazy, but it greatly reduces swelling and bruising.  I thought it was crazy when I first heard about it, but IT REALLY WORKS.  And something about applying the oil on my daughter calms her when she’s crying.   For best results, apply it as soon as possible.

Do you have any other unconventional but trusted remedies that you use in your family? Please share!

This is so helpful, my daughter started walking about a month and a half ago but now she wants to run, we’ve had lots of little incidents happen in the last while so this is great!!!! Thank you Jamie

Ironically, my kids just bumped heads really hard yesterday and I tried your trick (since I saw your post before it was up!) and it worked! No bruises today! They started getting goose eggs, but today there isn’t a sign. Nice!

One random thing that we tried on my daughter, as suggested by our Russian doctor for some really bad bug bites that got infected, was giving her a bath with black tea and laurel leaves. We made about a liter of very strong black tea with about 12 laurel leaves in it and poured it (with the leaves) into the bath. I helped both the infection and the itchiness. Who would have thought?! The laurel leaves have an antiseptic property and I am guessing the tea soothes the itch? Has anyone heard of this? I just know it worked!

These are great tips! I’m sure I’ll need to try the olive oil one eventually and Ashley I might just try the tea bath, my oldest has fair skin with some irritation that she can’t stop scratching.

Ooooo…I’ll have to try this. Especially since my 16 month old girls get lots of bumps and love to try to say Olive Oil [comes out “lala lala”] 🙂

I’ll have to try that. Living in the Middle East means there’s plenty of olive oil in the house.

Mosquitoes are really bad here too and while it’s been pretty chilly here, it’s not cold enough to kill the little vermin. So I’ll have to remember that advice about the tea/laurel.

Also, don’t forget how good honey is with allergies and coughs. For help with allergies it must be local honey.
