Tuesday Topic: Staying up on American culture

Do you consider it important to stay up on/connected with what is going on in American culture? Why or why not? If this is an important value of yours, how do you go about keeping up with our home culture? What are some elements of American culture that have popped up and passed you by since you’ve been overseas? (Here are just a few things that I have had to Google to know what my friends are talking about back home: iRobot, Vitamix and green smoothies, Keurig, Zumba, Stroller Strides, Bumbo seat…)

Tuesday Topic: Helping kids deal with being foreigners

A couple of weeks ago as my son was looking out the window of our car at a crowd of people, he asked, “Mom, are we the only people in the world who aren’t Russian?” He of course has American friends and family that he loves and knows well, but I found his statement telling about how he feels about being different from most of the people in his world. He is 4 and a half years old and already seems to struggle more with feeling different than his older sister ever has. At the same age, she thought that she was Russian and had a harder time grasping the fact that she was in fact from a different country. These two kids have been raised in the same place with much of the same circumstances, but they seem to perceive their different-ness based on their own personalities.

How do you help your kids deal with the fact that they are the from another culture? How do you speak to and help your kids who feel pain over this fact? How do you help your kids value and know their “home” culture if they don’t seem to really miss it or have a longing to know it? Do you have any other thoughts on this topic that you’d like to share?

Tuesday Topic: Surviving Furlough

From Phyllis in Ukraine: What does it take to survive a furlough? We’re planning a trip now, and I still feel like I haven’t recovered from the last time we went, four years ago!

Tuesday Topic: Advice for Missionaries Moving to a NewField

From Shilo in Paraguay (currently on furlough): What advice would you give someone switching fields (ministry locations)? What do you wish you could tell your packing-for-the-field-for-the-first-time self now that you’ve been in your location for awhile?

Tuesday Topic: Missionary Moms with an Empty Nest

From Tammy in Tanzania: I would like to hear from moms who have an empty nest. You know, I thought once my children grew up and left home my job as a Mom would, in many respects, cease. However, I find that they need me, and my prayers, just as much as ever – if not more. With my first grandchild on the way this summer I am feeling a real pull towards America. How do moms deal with this season in life? In what ways have they found to be the mother their children need while so far away?

Tuesday Topic: Thriving Long-term

From Kara in Russia: What do you think it takes to thrive long-term overseas?

Tuesday Topic: How can churches/individual encourage missionaries?

Cindy in California: I currently serve on the Missions Board at my church in California.  We are trying to raise the bar with “Missionary Care” for the missionaries we support.  I would love to know what has been an encouragement to the women who participate with Missionary Mom’s in terms of what a church (or individual) has done in the realm of missionary care.  I know there are “Care Packages” and birthday cards but what else?  I know we want to care for missionaries while they are on the field, but what should we consider doing when someone is coming for home assignment or even leaving the field permanently.  I’d like to know things that might be directed toward the entire family, as well as the “mom”, the “dad” and the “children”.

Tuesday Topic: Engaging Your Kids In Ministry

From Amie headed to South Sudan: How do you engage your kids and help them feel involved in your ministry?

(P.S. Shilo has just passed her due date and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their baby girl! Let’s all be praying for her little one to arrive safely and soon! We’re excited for you, Shilo!)

Tuesday Topic: Real-life oasis experiences

As I was planning this week’s series,  I wanted to see how Webster’s Dictionary defined the word “oasis.” Here is how it was defined:

1. a small fertile or green area in a desert region, usually having a spring or well.
2. something serving as a refuge, relief, or pleasant change from what is usual, annoying, difficult, etc.
For today’s Tuesday Topic, I would love for us to share some of our “oasis” experiences. Perhaps you have walked through a metaphorical dessert and God, in the midst, provided a green, cool, thirst-quenching oasis. Perhaps you have found yourself in a season of chaos but were given a strong and peaceful refuge from the surrounding storm.  These things might be tangible or spiritual in nature. I am sure each of our oasis experiences will differ greatly, so let’s encourage one another as we share about God’s amazingly personal provision and protection during such seasons.
